Here is a map showing where we will be working, 30 minutes North from Recife.
Many of us have been in contact with Andressa, our host in Brazil, as there are so many ways nowadays to communicate. Facebook is nice!
This is our team hotel. It's in what is considered a very safe area of Recife and is within walking distance of an open-air market for crafts and souvenirs, a famous Brazilian steakhouse (that we'll be checking out one day), and of course the beach.
Andressa will be staying at the hotel with us, and will be with us all the time to translate and help out.
We will be working in the town of Olinda, which is about a 20-30 minute drive from the hotel. The foundation has been laid for the new building, so we will be laying bricks. A professional brick-mason will be there to teach us what to do and help us out along the way. Since the work is outside, the weather will also determine how quickly
we get to work each day.
The children will be on holiday vacation during our visit, but the pastor who leads this Shade & Fresh Water Project is arranging a couple afternoons for us to spend time with them, to do activities, play games, etc.
In Brazil, you should expect to eat. Then there's a meal after that meal. Plus 10 more after that before lunch. Ok, its an exaggeration, but we will eat A LOT! We'll have breakfast and dinner at the hotel most days, lunch and snacks in Olinda, and perhaps a meal or two in people's homes along the way...as well as enjoying the steakhouse, a pizzeria, and some other restaurants during our time there.
Monday, June 18 is our next team meeting at 7:00pm. More information to share afterwards...
